Currently on Ebay

I recently had a huge clearout due to a severe lack of room and poor financial state! This means it is likely I will be selling on ebay for quite some time! Here are some of the items currently up for auction:http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/biba_marie_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ

Two Broken Hearts, Two Style Icons

Nisha Thirkell and Amber Butchart, aka The Broken Hearts are a Dj and performance duo like no other. Taking inspiration from showgirls, burlesque, circus slideshows and the golden age of Hollywood cinema, they use every performance as an excuse for dressing up. This shouldn't prove to be an impossible task; after all they both have jobs in London's mecca for all things vintage, Beyond Retro, and have an extensive collection of identical costumes solely created for their shows. Their quirky style not only caught my eye but also the fashionable eyes of i-D, Nylon and Artrocker magazines, as well as features on their fabulous style in Vogue. Find out more about The Broken Hearts on their myspace:

Pierrots on the Runway

The Moschino Spring/Summer 2009 collection seemingly payed homage to the costumes of early theatre via Pierrots, Showgirls and 1920s Flappers. A host of ruffles, monochrome harlequin prints, oversized bows and drop-waisted mini dresses graced the models who strutted their stuff on a stark white catwalk adorned with giant headless mannequins wearing pretty silk dresses! If this show was anything to go by, expect an ongoing trend of frivilous and theatrical fashion.

Luella does Ladylike

The Luella Spring/Summer 2009 collection played host to a pretty pastel fashion tea party at this year's London fashion week. A strictly pastel palette formed the basis of the a demure look, which featured copious amounts of ruffles, florals and the classic hourglass silhouette; perfect for a spot of English tea! Formerly making her mark in the fashion world as a journalist writing for the likes of Vogue, Luella Bartley has cemented her place as one of Britain's most talented designers. For a more affordable way to achieve ladylike elegance, invest in some vintage pieces (a 1940s tea dress or 1950s prom dress is the best place to start) and accessorise with a fascinator and pearls.

Pierrettes in disguise?

London based indie-electro duo Robots in Disguise become pierrettes in their latest video for upcoming single The Tears. The video also features Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh fame (who is infact currently dating Robot in Disguise's Dee Plume) donning a pierrot inspired outfit. The song and video are both brilliant as per usual with these ladies; have a look at their myspace page if you get time as they really are worth a listen

Alexa Chung is Elle's London style icon

Alexa Chung graces the cover of Elle magazine this month in an issue which salutes London's eclectic style. Her quirky indie look, consisting of blazers, plaids, smocks and skinny jeans, has made her a style icon and an obvious representative of great British style. However, she has ditched her trademark casual look in favour of a more sophisticated androgynous one for the magazine's cover (it's Chanel galore!) The issue celebrates the capital's most fashionable hideouts (including the most fabulous vintage shopping district in the country; Brick Lane) in synchrony with London's upcoming fashion week.

Label lust: Chanel

Once again Chanel proved itself as the demure girl's favourite label when it showcased its Autumn/Winter 08 collection at Paris this year. The classic Chanel look (monochrome palette, classic tailoring and timeless elegance) prevails; I'd love to get my hands on the cream and black block-heeled shoes, and the carousel!

Ebay treasure: Liebemarlene vintage

As an avid ebayer, I know that it is not often you find an online shop which is so consistently brilliant; Liebemarlene Vintage however, is seemingly an exception to the rule. I love their ditsy floral print skirts and gorgeous 50s day dresses (and those tan mary jane shoes are to die for!) Have a look for yourself at: http://stores.ebay.com/Liebemarlene-Vintage

Inspiration: Clara Bow

It's no secret that bows are a huge trend at the moment and one which is not likely to be shifting from the pages of Vogue anytime soon. The original It girl, silent film star of the 1920s Clara Bow, shows us how it's done here. Emulate this quirky 20s look by mixing romantic ruffles, a nude palette and, of course, a bountiful supply of bows.

Tim Walker's Wonderland

How beautiful is the photography of Tim Walker? I love the escapism and fantastical nature of his work; its all very frivilous but absolutely stunning. His exhibition, Tim Walker - Pictures showcases at the Design museum until the 28th of September. http://www.designmuseum.org/exhibitions/2008/timwalker

And it seems that high street favourite Topshop have also been inspired by Walker's playful photography; their Autumn/Winter 08 collection Wonderland mixes harlequin prints, colourful sequins and pretty tulle prom dresses for an altogether otherworldly, fairytale inspired look (Wonderland is a very apt name for the collection, you wouldn't look out of place at the Mad Hatter's tea party in some of these creations!) I can't wait to get my hands on the gorgeous blue sequinned prom dress!

Pierrot and Pierrette - The art deco art of love

Lately, I have developed a general interest in the [adorable] famous clowns who often featured in Italian and French theatre productions during the 17th century, Pierrot and Pierrette. They are often depicted as lovers and seen more predominantly in vintage art deco imagery (which is probably why I like them so much). Here is an example of the beautiful imagery they feature in to get the blog started.
